A door-left-open reminder that helps.
The useful part is the reminder, not the sensor. Decide which door matters and how long it can stay open before you want to hear about it.

- A compatible contact sensor
Aqara P2 on Amazon ↗This option needs a compatible Matter-over-Thread controller and Thread border router; check the full setup. - A controller that supports your reminder
Home Assistant Green on Amazon ↗Optional controller to evaluate. Green alone does not supply a Thread radio or establish P2 compatibility. - Your phone and a written reminder planDecide who receives the alert and keep the normal household safety routines.
Start with the routine
Pick one door: the back door after letting the dog out, for example. Write down who should get the reminder and when. A short delay may be useful on a cold day; a longer delay may suit a busy afternoon.
Map the automation
Your plan is: door opens → wait for your chosen delay → confirm it is still open → send one reminder. Cancel the reminder when the door closes. Add a cooldown so one open door does not produce a stream of notifications.
Check the full chain before buying
A contact sensor needs a compatible way to report its state. Depending on the product, that could be a hub or its own Wi-Fi app. Confirm your controller can perform the delay, recheck the state, and deliver the notification you want. A device label alone does not establish that the complete routine will work.
Test normal family behavior
Open and close the door before the delay. Leave it open past the delay. Open it twice in a row. Check that the intended person receives the alert and that closing the door cancels it. Revisit the delay after a week.
What belongs on your shopping list
A compatible contact sensor, a controller if required, and batteries if not included. Check installation clearances and the manufacturer’s instructions. This is a convenience reminder; keep the usual household safety routines in place.
